A proven four phase migration process, defined by AWS to enable migration at scale.

Assessment

Understanding your existing environment is necessary step in your migration planning. AWS tools such as TSO Logic automate the process of assessing your on-premises resources and build a right sized and cost optimised projection for running your applications in AWS.

Readiness and Planning

Building on the Assessment phase, the Readiness and Planning phase involves developing a migration plan which will include a map of interdependencies, the migration strategies for each workload as a result of a further analysis of your environment.

The migration plan is iterative and should be updated after each major set of migrations to ensure lessons learnt are captured for future migrations.

AWS define 7 common migration strategies; relocate, rehost, replatform, refactor, repurchase, retire, or retain.

Native AWS tools such as the AWS Application Discovery Service and the AWS Migration Hub do a lot of the "heavy lifting", requiring less manual effort for migration planning.

Migrations

Migration Factory is designed to move workloads and any related services with speed and scale.  Starting with workloads that suit rapid migration such as server rehosting (lift and shift), and then moving to other workloads that suit refactoring, or replatforming.

Migrations are completed within a sprint and each workload grouped by migrated strategy (rehost, replatform etc).  At the completion of each migration, operational procedures and documentation are updated to reflect services hosted on AWS.

Operations and Optimisations

As workloads are migrated, operational procedures and processes need to be updated to reflect the new state of your environment - this includes procedures such as business continuity, backup/restores and application updates.

For workloads that were rehosted (VM migration) this is an opportunity to leverage cloud native services to modernise and optimise your applications.
