CUB Azure Cloud migration

CUB had a looming deadline to move out of their old headoffice and datacenter. Rather than move their datacenter, they came to Olikka to migrate all infrastructure and applications to Azure in a proven way.

Challenge

Industry: Food and Beverage
Core Business: Manufacturing
Location: Melbourne, Hobart
Employees: 1,300+

CUB has a stated strategic direction for a transition to Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS) running in Microsoft Azure. Part of the transition is to assess existing application stack readiness for cloud migration into Azure. CUB has already provisioned its Azure platform within Australia, and sought Olikka to complete the Azure readiness analysis, categorisation of CUB’s applications as well as develop and deliver a detailed cloud migration plan.

Outcome

Leveraging Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework for Migrations, Olikka divided the project into Assess, Deploy & Release phases.

Olikka used Azure Migrate in the assess phase to assess on-premise VMware, VMs, Hyper-V VMs and physical servers for Azure migration.  An Azure Migration Landing Zone was then established.  This saved time and effort as the Azure Migrate Landing Zone contains the core infrastructure resources and policy controls without having to reinvent the wheel.

In the deploy phase weekend batch migrations were established to migrate related workloads and services, each batch migration was also used as an opportunity to decommission workloads flagged in the assess phase.

Workloads were released to production and handover performed to CUB staff and their offshore managed service provider.
