What is Identity Management?

Identity Management is a foundational security component and is key to building a strong information security program. Identity Management provides standardised and automated authentication,  ensuring users have the access to the business systems, data and applications they require while preventing access to those unauthorised to access.

Identity management programs save IT time and money while reducing risk to the business.

Olikka’s 4 pillars of identity:

  1. Authentication - Securely identifying who you are
  2. Authorisation - Controlling what you can access, where, when and from what device
  3. Lifecycle - On-boarding, ongoing management, off-boarding
  4. Single Sign On - Simplifying secure access to systems from any type of device, anywhere

Where is identity used?

Employees - Employees and contractors across the group

Customers and business partners - Customers, 3rd parties and Business to Business integrations

Websites and SaaS - Software as a service, internal and external websites

Devices - Laptops, mobile, desktops, wearables

Applications - Internally developed and commercially available applications

API’s - System to system integration

Why should you care about Identity Management?

Identity theft cost Australians $16 million in 2019, that doesn’t take into account information and data loss costing Australian business much more than that.

Breaches against enterprise statistics

69% of enterprise breaches perpetrated by outsiders

34% of enterprise breaches perpetrated by internal actors

29% of breaches involved stolen credentials

32% of breaches involved phishing

Recently in Australia we've seen large identity theft crimes through access to payroll and superannuation details costing tens of millions of dollars. In May Toll Group suffer a second ransomware attack for the year. Information stolen related to current and former employee data in Australia and New Zealand.

The attackers claimed that they accessed over 200GB of corporate files, which they started uploading onto the dark web, after attempting to extract a ransom from Toll Group.
