About the company

Sensis is a marketing services company formerly known as the National Directory Services. Sensis publishes the White and Yellow pages phone directories and in 2004 purchased the Trading Post, a classified advertising periodical. In recent years Sensis has modernised its product offering to include search engine marketing and optimisation services, website products, social, data and mapping solutions through its digital advertising agency, Found.

The Sensis

Sensis identified a strategic initiative to transition from its internally hosted VMware View Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to a cloud hosted Amazon WorkSpaces environment. The new solution had to perform equally or better than the existing on premises solution to avoid penalties from depending business partners.

Why Amazon WorkSpaces

Amazon WorkSpaces eliminates the need for huge upfront investment and ongoing management of supporting infrastructure. Moreover, it provides the users with similar desktop experience while keeping the data secured on the cloud. Additionally, the desktop could be accessed from any supported device, including iPads, Fire Tablets, Windows, Chromebooks, Mac, and Android tablets by using web access through Firefox and Chrome browsers.

The Solution

Sensis and Olikka delivered a highly successful (PoC) environment that through considerable testing proved to be more efficient than the existing on premises solution. Olikka then moved into production, with extensive pre-migration planning and collaboration to ensure all internal stakeholders were allowed to contribute to the project. This increased internal Amazon WorkSpaces knowledge and engagement while lifting stakeholder satisfaction.

The Benefits

Olikka identified and deployed Operation Support Processes for smooth AWS user work experience and implementation, including WorkSpaces image management, reporting and on-boarding, off-boarding and decommissioning.

Olikka provided an Amazon WorkSpaces Migration Plan (including following fine tuning) to successfully migrate 550 production users from the existing VMware View environment to Amazon WorkSpaces and introduced Multi Factor Authentication to increase login security.

Olikka automated WorkSpaces provisioning and deprovisioning by using AWS serverless computing to significantly reduce human effort to provision or retire workspaces. Olikka also provided a seamless cost methodology to allow Sensis to see WorkSpaces running costs for each business unit quickly.
